Look after your hair this Christmas

With Christmas fast approaching, many of us will be attending all manner of events and parties. As we have fun getting all dolled up and looking our best this season, bear in mind that all these events may have negative effects on our hair. How you may ask?

In the process of trying to get your hair looking picture perfect for the season, chances are you will resort to using heat a more frequently than normal. Excessive heat use damages hair. Heat from flat irons and curling irons, and blow dryers are great for getting hair straight and perfectly styled, but they damage hair over time. Even for those who wear weaves it shortens the life span of your extensions, and the hair left out to blend with the weaves gets damaged very quickly. This is why a lot of women have very short broken hair in front.

So how can you look great this Christmas without damaging your hair or extensions?

  • If your real hair is out avoid using direct heat, roller set your hair instead. This is much less damaging option to styling your hair.
  • Always wash and condition your hair before installing a weave.
  • If you have a weave installed with your real hair left out in front to blend. Make sure your real hair left out is well conditioned and moisturized before using a flat or curling iron to style.
  • Try and wash and condition the hair you’ve left out to blend with your weave at least once a week. Hair that is well conditioned and clean will suffer less damage when during heat styling
  • Limit using heat to once a week on the your real hair left out, and always use a heat protectant before any form of heat styling.
  • You can use heat more frequently on your hair extensions, but bear in mind if you heat style it daily regularly you will shorten it’s life span by giving it split ends. Remember human hair, virgin remy or not can still get split ends. You can still protect your hair extensions by using a heat protectant on your extensions whenever you heat style.
  • Use rollers to preserve or style your hair. Rollers of various sizes can give you the same exact look as a flat iron or curling iron, it just takes a bit longer. Your hair will thank you for it.

Beauty: How to Care for your Long Hair!

One of the best things about having long hair is being able to sweep it off your face and into a bun or ponytail anytime you want! Even though long, flowing locks of hair seems like it would be super low maintenance, it’s actually even more important to take really good care of it .This is because the longer your hair is – the older and drier the ends of your hair are – which means it needs some TLC to keep it looking shiny and healthySummertime means you should protect your skin with sunscreen but many of us don’t realize that your hair can also get damaged by the sun’s rays and also needs to be protected! Your hair can get sunburn too! And if you colour your long hair – the sun can also do a number on fading. And don’t forget to protect your hair from salt water and chlorine from swimming in the pool or beach

Top 10 Tips for Long Hair

  1. Make sure you are washing your hair with the right shampoo and conditioner If you’re using an oily hair shampoo and you have fine hair – your hair will feel lifeless and flat. If you have color-treated hair– using the right shampoo will help the color last longer.
  2. Rinse your hair with cool or lukewarm water. Rinsing it with hot water can cause hair damage to the cuticle.
  3. When you come out of the shower and need to dry wet hair – don’t rub it in a towel. Use the towel to lightly dab and wring the moisture out of your hair. Don’t let it dry in a towel turban – this causes hair breakage over time.
  4. Brush your hair with a natural bristle hair brush (try and avoid plastic brushes). Detangle wet hair gently with a wide tooth comb and some detangling spray. Be gentle with wet hair, it can stretch more when wet and is more prone to breakage
  5.  Clean your brushes regularly by soaking them in warm water and shampoo for 5 minutes and removing stray hairs.
  6. Avoid using the hairdryer and heat styling tools every day. This dries out your hair and takes the shine away if you do it too often. Even better if you try and let your hair air dry whenever you can! Use snag-free hair elastics on your hair to prevent breakage.
  7. After swimming in the pool or at the beach wash your hair with a mild-cleansing shampoo to remove saltwater, chlorine and pollutants.
  8. Protect your hair from UV damage by using a protective conditioner with sunscreen in it when you go out in the sun. It not only protects your hair from sun damage but also keeps color-treated hair fresh.
  9. Don’t neglect your scalp, it can also get sunburnt and dry – lightly spray in leave-conditioner to moisturize all day and rub some pure jojoba oil on your scalp if it feels itchy. You can also put the jojoba oil on your ends – it’s light oil that mimics the natural oils of your hair so it won’t feel heavy at all!
  10. Deep condition your hair with a moisturizing hair masque once a week. If you have thin or fine hair, don’t apply conditioner on the scalp to avoid having it go flat.

1970’s Popular Hairstyles

The 70’s was a time of where people stopped becoming so high maintenance like in the 50’s and 60’s, instead the majority of the population swapped their hairspray, teasing coms and rollers for blow dryers and the awkward use of irons. The so called flowing out of bed look was one that was popular with the majority of the population. It was all about having long flowing straight hair. Other hairstyles such as the ‘Feather look’ that we have Farrah Fawcett to thank for was also a very popular trend in the 70’s. This type of hair style was very easy to achieve as all you have to do is blow the hair from underneath to create volume and then and then blow dry in an up and out motion around the face creating the feathered look.

The disco wedge cut was also a huge phenomenon in the 70’s being the alternative for the party goers. Think a short bob with hard lines and then usually frizzed for extra volume. This hairstyle may have been due to the fact that Wella brought out a new product allowing hair for maximum volume allowing hair dressers sculpting perfect afros. Why not try bring one of these funky styles into fashion today!!!!
